iPad 2 to be ' superior to the Xbox 360 '

LCEO Michael Schade didn't appear to be speaking with the benefit of insider knowledge, when he gave a speech at develop conference in Brighton, but he still seemed very certain anyway.

Referring to an apparently theoretical iPad HD, Schade said : " I think you can expect some time next year to have rendering capabilities on mobile devices superior to the Xbox 360."

" And i believe by the end of the year the iDevices could have sold 120 copies, which puts them close to a par with the PlayStation 2's 140 million."

His speech was entitled
' Mobile becomes Console', a reference to a recent comment from epic boss Mark Rein. Rein recently claimed that mobile devices are the consoles of the future and would play host to top the line games like Gears of War as soon as they could double their power.

" I'd rather sell 10 million games at $25 and have a chance to sell downloadable content than 5 million at $50 on a disc that gets traded around," he also said.

All of which makes for an interesting conference speech, but does anyone really want to play a touchscreen version of Gears of War?

We're not sure, but the idea of a console-less games industry is fast catching on with other developers, with BioWare, who were also at develop conference claiming that ' the future isn't necessarily on console'.

" That's the past. It's going to be a strong thing going forward, but the future is in all of these new businesses that are starting up," said BioWare's two founders.

" We want to expand because, you look at what kids are playing on. Kids are playing on iPhone and iPad. The 3D's looks pretty amazing. All these platform option, we want to be touching on all those, " they added
