Ontario challenge AMD Atom in quarter 4

Advance Micro Device ( AMD ) is rumored to be bringing the Fusion chip faster than the prescribed schedule. This chop will first appear in netbooks and laptops for low-end segment next year.

Unfortunately, according to AMD CEO Dirk Meyer, the Fusion chip family will not be present in the form of tablets. Representatives have chipset code name ' Ontario ' will present in the fourth quarter of this year.


" The timeline for Ontario has Changed dramatically," said Meyer, as reported by PC world, Friday( 16 / 07 / 2010 ).

Added by him, Ontario Fusion chip will have two processor cores and chip x86 DirectX 11 GPU. Ontario should make AMD more competitive in areas such as the netbook, which is curently dominated by Intel. This chip will bring improvement to the graphics device that has a screen smaller and consume less power.

As is known, the Intel Atom netbok chip including an integrated graphics chip. Unfortunately, their perfomance is still criticized for its graphic which were deemed to be lacking. An integrated processor that is Directx 11 should be capable of playing full 1080p video on small screen.

Confirmed also by Meyer, Ontario will not be targeted on the tablet for now, because the tablet market is considered immature and the company wants to focus on more established areas.

Ontario will be manufactured by Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Co. using 40-nanometer manufacturing process.
